Door County Flood Emergency Evacuation Plan (Plan)
The Door County Flood Emergency Evacuation Plan complies with the state-level mandate where the county may only permit new development on a lot served by a road below the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) if it has adopted a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) certified emergency evacuation plan. Per the DNR plan requirements, Door County’s Plan describes a process for monitoring flooding conditions as well evacuation in the event flooded roads would prevent safe egress.
Plan Maps. The Plan’s associated maps, listed to the right by municipality, show lots with residential homes served by roads located below the BFE. These maps also identify points (landmarks) on and near these roads that are the furthest below the BFE and likely to flood first. The county is asking residents to help monitor these landmarks during heavy rain or storm events. In the event standing water is noticed at one or more these landmarks, please call 911 to report. Safety personnel may then inspect the area to determine if a flood emergency evacuation “watch” or “warning” needs to be issued.
If a municipality is not listed, it does not have any lots served by roads below the BFE or it has lots that are served by roads below the BFE, but those lots have safe egress. For a listing of street names by municipality and map code, click on the “Map Index by Street Name” link, also to the right.
In the event of a flood emergency evacuation watch or warning, Door County would use CodeRED to inform property owners via phone, email, text and social media. To sign up for the CodeRED service click on this link: CodeRED.
Note that this Plan was adopted as an appendix to the broader Door County Emergency Response Plan, which outlines general emergency protocol. A copy of the Emergency Response Plan may be requested by contacting Emergency Management at the contact information below.
